Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation

INTERVIEW

DR. THANDI NDLOVU (LATE)

Born in Soweto in 1954, Dr Thandi Ndlovu was raised in a home where kindness, love, excellence and the values of sharing were central to living. In that dynamic setting, she was encouraged to be a good student and to be an active member of her community. A natural leader even at a young age, she was a part of many organisations and one of the founders of the Students Christian Movement in Soweto.

OUR MISSION

The Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation was founded on the idea of supporting orphaned and vulnerable children through both their schooling and tertiary education. While we believe that education is a key player in South Africa, we cannot ignore that a child's environment plays a huge role towards the ability of a child to receive learning.

To this end the Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation holistically supports its children, by covering not only education fees, but also, accommodation, and meals. The foundation aims to support a child, in its own way, as a parent would.

HOW WE DO IT

Not only are the students supported financially, but also emotionally. The foundation covers the student's study fees, study material, accommodation and provides students with pocket money each month.

ABOUT US

About Us

HOW OUR STORY STARTED

"It was during 2007 that I was introduced to Dr Thandi Ndlovu. It was one of those meetings which resulted in an immediate connection between two people and we both instantly knew that we would create a strong business and personal bond. Dr. Thandi's response to my asking her to join the Board of this relatively new company was without hesitation positive. We mulled the case of how we should compensate her for her services, to which she responded that she was not joining the Board of the company for compensation, but cause. This created the thought that company should make donations to a fund that would support young under priviledged kids. That was how the well-known and extremely positive Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation was born." - Koos van Ettinge

HOW WE SUPPORT OUR CHILDREN

The team is dedicated to supporting and assisting the students in a holistic way. Not only are students supported financially, but emotionally too.

The foundation covers the student's study fee's, study material, accommodation and provides students with pocket money each month. Bearing in mind that many students the foundation supports come from an orphaned background, the foundation hope to provide for each child as they would their own child.

Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation operates on a completely transparent basis. All finances are audited.

The greatest risk facing the Dr. Thandi Ndlovu Children's Foundation is a lack of funds. The foundation is a non-profit foundation and relies on sponsorship and funding from companies and other organisations.

Apart from minor general administration fees, the foundation runs entirely on volunteer energy. This means that nearly 100% of all funds go directly to the student.

As funding comes in, we support our students in the following way:

  • Study fees
  • Accommodation fees
  • Monthly pocket money
  • General emotional support
  • General emotional support

SUMMIT FOR HOPE

Dr. Thandi and a team of hikers (15 in all) climbed to the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak, Mount Kilimanjaro in a Summit for Hope. This hike was fully self sponsored by the climbers, and the proceeds of the fundraising drive ALL went towards the students and their studies. The administrator, accountant and everyone involved with the Foundation did it on a pro bono basis. The team successfully raised R410,000.
